Description a seated woman in a wooded landscape, turning her head away from a letter that she is reading. Representation of H?lo?se, illustrating ‘Julie, or the New Heloise’, a novel by Jean-Jacques Rousseau inspired by the 12th century story of H?lo?se’s illicit love for, and secret marriage to, her teacher Pierre Ab?lard. Made by an anonymous engraver after F. Wheatley. Medium: Stipple engraving printed in sepia on wove (vellin) paper. Sheet size: 26.7 x 36.5 cm (10.51 x 14.37 inch). Image size: 24.5 x 30 cm. (9.65 x 11.81 inch). Condition: good, given age. Image fine. Paper loss in two places in the top margin, a small tear in the margin and edge of the image (top left), two foxing spots in the left margin, a small crease in the edge of the image.
