Description (‘The Village Soothsayer’) This plate shows Colin and Colette talking with the village soothsayer to reinforce their love. Scene from a French opera by J.J. Rousseau. Made by Jourd’heuil after Briard. Medium: Etching / engraving with hand colouring on wove (vellin) paper. Sheet size: 42 x 56 cm (16.54 x 22.05 inch). Image size: 34.5 x 45 cm. (13.58 x 17.72 inch). Condition: fair, given age. Corners damp stained. Paper with crinkles and a diagonal crease upper left. Light foxing. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Biography artist: Gabriel Briard (1725-1777) was a landscape and portrait painter of some grace and facility of hand, the master of Demarne.
